Marriage Registration Offices in Pune

Marriages in India are registered under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 or the Special Marriage Act of 1945. As per the Supreme Court’s directives, issued in 2006, marriages must be registered irrespective of the caste, creed or religion to be considered legitimate. Failing to do so will cause it to become illegal. Why to register Marriages?The reason people do not consider it necessary to register their marriage is due to their ignorance towards the many benefits of registration. The stringent rules implemented by the court to register marriages are more of a social concern than personal interest.Benefits of Marriage registration are as follows:

  • To ensure that the bride and groom are of legal age of marriage (18 for the bride and 21 for the bridegroom).
  • Certificate of marriage is a legal proof for obtaining passport, visas and other primary documents.
  • Marriage certificate is of importance while applying for loan or claiming bank deposits and Life insurances.
  • Marriage registration is a valuable document in case of divorce or taking any legal action against any one of the spouse involved in an unlawful practice.
  • Availing Tax exemptions, Medical reimbursement, housing and employment benefits.
  • Receive social security, Medicare and disability benefits from the government.
  • Smoothen the process of spouse’s property inheritance in case of death.
  • Avail consumer benefits meant for married couples.
  • Quick adoption process, availing public assistance and special loans.
  • Government rules and regulations which otherwise would take a longer period of time are quickly completed in case of a registered marriage.

Marriage Registration Process:The procedure of marriage registration tends to differ from one jurisdiction to another. There are two cases wherein the couples who are already married but have not registered their marriage or couples who are planning for a court marriage.Marriage solemnized but not registered:

  • The parties (married) must obtain a form in order to apply for registration which has to be filled in and submitted within a specified period time along with all the mandatory documents and a prescribed fee at the registrar office.
  • The marriage certificate can be obtained within 7 days of registration.
  • The form filling procedure can also be done online.

Court Marriage:

  • In case of ‘Court Marriage’ both parties submit a joint application along with the relevant documents at the registrar office.
  • After a month notice, the parties along with three witnesses must appear in front of the registrar on a given fixed date.
  • Signatures of the two parties and witnesses are obtained on the official documents. The marriage is solemnized and a certificate is issued in this regard.

  • Application forms duly filled in and signed by both the parties.
  • Attested copies of Age proof(10th mark sheet /12th mark sheet/Birth certificate/School leaving certificate/Passport/Driving license)
  • Attested copies of Address  proof( voter ID/Ration card/Copy of Electricity Bill or Telephone bill/Driving License/Passport)
  • Two passport size photographs, each, of both the parties.
  • Marriage invitation card (if marriage is already solemnized).

Special cases:

  • In case of widow/widower remarriage death certificate of the spouse is required at the time of registration.
  • Divorcee must submit a copy of the Divorce order in case of remarriage registration.
  • Non-objection certificate must be submitted in case the applicant is a foreign national.
  • A copy of Conversion Certificate  in case of religion other than that mentioned in the Hindu Marriage Act(Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh).
  • A certificate from the priest in case the marriage was solemnized in a religious place.

    • Any one of the two parties can submit the application for registration in the registrar office. But on the given date, officially allotted from the registrar’s office (approx. 1 month after submitting the application), both the parties have to be present to solemnize the marriage.

      As marriage registration is under government authorities it remain close on sundays & govt. holidays.

    • Both the parties have to be physically present before the registrar to officially register the marriage, on the given date, along with witnesses.

    If the groom has to leave overseas and the Registration is required for Visa processing of wife, can the certificate be obtained faster?

    • There is no tatkal as such in obtaining the certificate. If you have all the documents ready in advance then the process will get over within the given time without delays.

  11. I had gone to the Aundh Ward office and they told us that the process of giving notices (submitting the joint application) is only done in the office at Somwar Peth (near Sasoon Hospital). Is this true ?

    Also is there any way we can get the registrar at our residence on the day of marriage ?

      I think there isn’t any procedure that you can get registrar at your residence. My friend register his marriage at office which is behind collector office.

      In some cases registrar comes to your place for the marriage registration but you need check what are those cases with the officials.

      After registration, office gives you a copy of certificate of marriage registration. If documents are misplaced you need to confirm the specific office where did she registered her marriage & apply for duplicate copy.

      Just go there in marriage registration office & tell them you want to do court marriage. Officers will give you a date after 1 month & it is mandatory that your marriage notice will be places on notice board of the office. You need to produce identity proof, address proof, photos, 2 witnesses with their identity & address proofs. On the given date you have to come along with all the documents & witnesses.

      Yaha par ye thik hai ke aap dono families ki mutula understanding hai ke dono saath mein nahi rahenge, jab tak aap ke paas legal documetn diveroce papers nahi hai tab tak aap 2nd marriage nahi kar sakte. Agar aap ne ya 1st mariage wali baat 2nd marriage wale family members ko bataya hai ya unse chupaya hai bhi to aap hi ko future mein problem ho sakta hai. Meri soch hai aap jo bhi kare proper documents ke saath kare.

You need to go there with your all the documents date of birth proof, identity proof, address proof, marriage invitation card & 3 witnesses with their identity proof & photos.       You have election Id card, driving licence and bank passbook. those will suffice as address proof.
      If you are planning to move and move often then it will be best that you get your marriage registration certificate from Jalna.

      Duplicate Marriage certificate or a certified true copy of the Marriage certificate can be obtained at the Sub-Registrar or Municipality office where the Marriage is registered. A through search will be done on the records and the certificate will be issued as per the details available in the records of the Municipality office. Any corrections or modification in the certificate will be undertaken this work as per the regulations and procedures of the Municipality office.

    • Yes same case as of my parents. They asked my parents to apply afresh for a new certificate. If you remember any relevant registration number then it is possible to issue duplicate else you have to apply again.

      In India inter caste marriage is entirely legal as long as both bride and groom are adults. There will be legal hassles in the future and if there are any hassles from the families you can receive help from the police.

      For the 1 month that the application of marriage is put up for public objection anybody can go and object against the marriage. whether the objection is justified will be decided by the SDM. Your parents might come to know of the matter and object but whether that objection will be accepted depends on the judgement of the SDM.

      Does your marriage registration certificate has a signature of the Sub-Divisional magistrate or Additional District Magistrate? If yes then it is legal.

      After you fill your application form for marriage you will be given a date 1 month later when your marriage will be solemnized. you will receive the marriage registration certificate immediately after that.

      Ration Card having name of the Groom.
      • Election Identity Card.
      • The Copy of Electricity Bill received on name of Groom

      • Company Letter Head, Rent Agreement or Bank Passbook (any 2 documents)

      Do you mean to ask if an out of court settlement of the previous marriage is enough to grant you clearance for second marriage? In that case no, out of court settlements are not valid for remarriage. you have to at least go for mutual consent divorce.

    You can marry anytime you want but the only thing is it will not be a legal marriage.
    Only if you marry after the notice period, the marriage will be registered and called a legal marriage.
    Otherwise the way to temple is always open (as you said you are in urgency).

    After you submit the documents needed for registration a public notice is issued which is pasted on the marriage registration office notice board for 30 days. One copy of this notice is also sent to the marriage officer where the parties reside permanently/presently. Parents are not informed by the registration office.

    You do not need to convert to any other religion to be married to your husband. In case you have no prove to your marriage you should have a court marriage on which you should immediately receive a marriage certificate and your marriage will be legal.

    Marriage Invitation Card, incase it is not available you can draft an application on the Rs. 100/- stamp paper stating that no marriage invitation card was printed and affix a Marriage Photograph.

    Procedure:

    • Once all the above documents are submitted, you will receive your marriage certificate within 7 days duration. At the time of acquiring the same the Couple along with the 3 witnesses should be present.

    Note: (i) Incase the marriage was solemnized outside the state of Maharashtra the Marriage certificate can be obtained only after one month duration.

          Pan card is not an address proof. If you do not have any of the documents how do you hope to get married? You can get married in a temple but the marriage will not be legalized till you get a marriage certificate for which documents are necessary.

      Do you mean to ask if you can be married at your to-be-wife’s native place? Then the answer is yes you can. But for that you will have to stay in that place for 6 months prior to the marriage.

      Yes you can get married in Pune.You will need all your documents and for addres prove you will have to clarify with registrar.
      According to Hindu Marriage Act you will be able to get married anywhere in India.

      Marriage certificate may require only a few hours to be issued or in some cases it may take 1 to 2 weeks. it is delivered mostly in person.

  72. at the time of joint form submition there is need of all document of witness of both parties?

      At the time of form submission you have to submit all the documents of both parties.But documents of witnesses are not required.

    I stay in Akurdi,PCMC from last 23 years, i got married in U.P. Now when i went to register my marriage in A ward of PCMC, the person over there says that as the marriage was done out of state so the marriage should be registered in Pune office.
    Please tell me where should i register the marriage, contact person and the procedure.

    • Hi Anil,

      You can register your marriage in Pune. You need to go there with your all the documents date of birth proof, identity proof, address proof, marriage invitation card & 3 witnesses with their identity proof & photos. One of my friend register his marriage at marriage registration office which is behind collector office.

      Aapki shaadi bilkul ho sakti hai lekin wo kanuni taur pe nai hogi. Aap madir mein jakar shaadi ke bandhan mein bandh sakti hain jab kabhi bhi aap chahein lekin agar aap ko shaadi ke kaagzat chahiye to uske liye appko aapki shaadi registration office se registration karvani hogi aur uske liye kuch documents ki zarurat hoti hai joki upar likhe article mein bataye gaye hain.

  78. Hi I am living in Bibwewadi, I have few doubts, please clarify.

    1) I am unmarried and my family is against this marriage so can I perform court marriage in mentioned bibwewadi office? Is this office for only marriage registration and not for court marriage?

    2) Is it mandatory to hire lawyer to perform court marriage?

    3) Do I need to perform any rituals over there during court marriage like exchange of garland or puting Mangalsutra?

    Please help me in this regard.

    • Hi Parag,
      1)It is best to get your marriage registered in the marriage registration office closest to the address where you live. However you can do it elsewhere if you want to.
      2)You only need the marriage registrar and three witnesses beside your bride and all the documents to solemnize a court marriage.
      3)If you want you can perform the ritual of exchange of garlands and Mangalsutra. However it is not compulsory.
